Irony Is Dead (Again!): "Ex-Argentine Police Officer Accused of Torture Gets Deported"

EXCERPT:

As of October, ICE had more than 200 active investigations and was pursuing more than 1,400 leads and deportation cases against torture suspects from 95 countries, ICE said in a statement.

Méndez, 67, was located living in Virginia in May 2009 by ICE's Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Unit. He was detained during deportation proceedings and was removed Thursday night.

Officials were acting on an Interpol notice which indicated that Méndez had been involved in operating clandestine detention centers in Argentina from 1976 to 1979.

In June 2009, following an investigation led by ICE's Office of Homeland Security Investigations, special agents arrested Méndez and accused him of overstaying his visa.

NOT RELENTING

``ICE will not allow the United States to be a safe haven for those who have come to our country in an effort to evade prosecution and punishment for the crimes they have committed against others,'' ICE Director John Morton said in a statement. ``We will not relent in our efforts to ensure that human rights violators are brought to justice and removed from our communities.''
